Trekking in Zanskar

The most elevated part of the Ladakh region Zanskar provides interesting and challenging treks and safaris to the trekkers and seekers both. The valley is best approachable by jeep from Kargil (which is second largest town in Ladakh region) and the road runs through the Suru Valley, across the Pensi La to Padum. A visit to the King of Zangla will heighten your visit to the valley.

ZANSKAR TREK

 

Kanji - Zangla Trek via Yulchung Nyerak (21 Days / 09 Days Trek)

 

This Trek starts from Kanji village in Indus Valley and ends at Zangla in Zanskar valley. During this trek, you cross 7 passes that are ready to provide you ultimate view of wonderful panoramic landscapes. Experience rich and heritage culture of both Ladakh and Zanskar by visiting well preserved ancient monasteries. The highest pass during this trek is Nigutse-la (5100 m).

 

Day 01: Arrive Delhi

Arrive in Delhi, Transfer to hotel for few hours.

 

Days 02: Flight Delhi - Leh

Early morning transfer to domestic Airport for Leh flight. Arrive Leh, transfer Hotel. Day is complete leisure to get fully acclimatize with the altitude of Ladakh. Overnight at Hotel in Leh. (3500 m)

 

Days 03: Sightseeing Around Leh

After breakfast drive to Stok. In Stok, visit the royal palace which was constructed by the King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal in 1825. After visit Stok Palace, drive to Matho village, 10 km from Stok. Matho monastery built by Lama Tumgpa Dorje in 13th century. After visit Matho, drive back to Leh. After Lunch, visit Shanti Stupa (peace pagoda) built by in collaboration with Japannese Govt and Ladakh Buddhist Association. Later visit Samkar Monastery, built in 1847 by Bakula Rinpoche. Overnight at hotel in Leh.(3500 m)

 

Days 04: Full Day Excursion (Shey Palace, Thiksey and Hemis Monastery)

Morning after breakfast, drive to Hemis monastery which is 45 km from Leh. Hemis festival is famous all over the Ladakh. After visiting Hemis monastery, drive back to Thiksey monastery, which is 27 km from Hemis. Thiksey monastery is the oldest monastery of Gelugpa School in Ladakh and The great Lama Paldan Shesrap built it in 14th century. After visiting Thiksey monastery drive back to Leh via visiting Shey Palace. Shey was the ancient capital and residence of the King of Ladakh before the new capital became established in Leh. The main temple contains a large copper guilt satue Buddha built by King Deldan Namgyal in 1633. Overnight at hotel in Leh. (3500m)

 

Day 05: Drive Leh – Alchi – Lamayuru – Kanji (170 km)

Morning after breakfast, drive to Lamayuru. Enroute visit famous ancient monastery Alchi, situated at a distance of 68 Km from Leh. Alchi monastery was built by great Lama Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo (The great translator) 1000 years ago. After the visit, continue drive to Lamayuru (58 km). Lamayuru monastery was constructed by Arahat Nimagung in between 10th and 11th century. After visit Lamayuru, continue your journey to Kanji(40 km). Overnight at camp in Kanji village. (3850 m)

 

Day 06: Trek Kanji – Kanji Dok (3/4 hrs)

After breakfast, start first day trek with easy walk along the right side of upstream river. After 2 hrs easy walk arrive at small hamlet where you find the campsite. The view of the valley and its stunning mountains from here is indescribable. Overnight at camp. (4100 m)

 

Day 07: Trek Kanji Dok – Yogma-la (4720 m) – Shillakong (5/6 hrs)

Leave camp after breakfast for Shilakong. While enjoying the morning sunshine, right from the camp you ascend gradually towards the Yogma-la Pass (4720m) . From the top of the pass you have spectacular view of landscape. After enjoying few minutes at the top, gently descend down and then you arrive at the camp. Overnight stay at camp (4300 m)

 

Day 08: Trek Shillakong – Nigutse-la (5100 m) - Urtsi Dok (5/6 hrs)

Morning after the breakfast, continue the trek by following the well defined and clear trek route on the left bank of the river. En-route amazing and beautiful landscape. After few hours of trek, you reach at the top of the Nigutse-la (5100 m). At the top of the pass, you will find yourself on top of the world and get the stunning and enchanting view of unforgettable landscape with different mountains of Himalayan range. Cross the pass and then descend down in beautiful lost valley opening on an immense plain where you find many animals like sheeps, goats and Yaks etc. Overnight Camp. (4500 m)

 

Day 09: Trek Urtsi Dok – Sirsir-la (4805 m) – Photoksar (4/5 hrs)

Today you have several river crossing so it is advisable to carry some extra shoes in your bag so that you may not get wet. As usual after breakfast, continue the trek with ascending the ridge. Follow the clear path on rolling ridge from where you see the Sirsir-la pass waiting for you to provide the panoramic view. Descending down and crossing of river takes you to the pass Sirsirla(4805m). Enjoy the view of wonderful valleys and its landscape. Gentle and easy descent by following the good trek path to Photoksar (A remote isolated charming village). Evening explore the village. Campsite before the village near the river. Overnight at Camp. (4210 m)

 

Day 10: Trek Photoksar – Boumitse-la (4200 m) – Base of Singey-la (7 hrs)

post breakfast, continue trek. Today you have to cross one easy pass. Right from the camp, start ascend for few meter and then continue along the clear path beatiful view of village Photoksar, surrounding mountains and stunning gorge. Carry on ascending up to top of Boumitse-la from where you can directly see far flung Singela Pass. still about more than three hours trek from this point. Until the base of Singe-la, you have to cross several small streams so advisable to carry extra pair of stockings in case you get wet. Overnight in camp at base of Singe-La. (4450 m)

 

Day 11: Trek Base of Singe-la – Singe-la (4960 m) – Yulchung - Nyerak (7 hrs)

Right from the camp, gradual ascend as far as top of Singela pass from where the route descends steeply to a loose boulder strewn area known as Champado Gongma. Beautiful and awesome view of landscape of the valley. Follow the beaten easy track and on the way you find a junction. One goes straight towards Lingshed and another goes down towards Yulchung village that you see below. Take left handside and then descend down in zig-zag clear path. Pass the beautiful village Yulchung and continue trek with gentle climb to cross the small easy pass Chucho Khuri-la (3970m). Cross the pass then steep zigzag descent as far as Zanskar River. Cross the River over a wooden bridge and then gently climb up towards Nyerak village. Arrive Nyerak. Overnight at Camp in Nyerak village (A small and charming village). (3750 m)

 

Day 12: Trek Nyerak – Labar-la (4800m) - Pangat-la (3900m) – Pharkunsa(6/7 hrs)

Morning after breakfast,gradually climb up to cross the Labar-la pass. It seems difficult to climb but slowly and steadily it becomes easy. So continue slowly and steadily to reach at the top of Labar la. From this point, you will enjoy spectacular and magnificent view of landscape. After crossing the pass, continue gentle climb towards the Pangat-la (3900m) that will provide you awesome panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and wonderful landscape. Cross the pass, easy descent down in the valley as far as l you reach near a river. Cross the river and then easy trek down along the downstream. Arrive at campsite with crossing of river towards right. Good campsite in the middle of willow trees near the river. Overnight at camp. (3730 m)

 

Day 13: Trek Pharkunsa – Zangla Sumdo (6/7 hrs)

As usual morning after breakfast, continue trek along with the river. Today you have to wade in the river for several meters so carry extra shoes in your bag. After then continue easy trek along the valley up to the campsite. Good campsite near the river. Overnight camp. (3740 m)

 

Day 14: Trek Zangla Sumdo – Namtse-la (5000 m) – Honara – Zangla (5/6 hrs)

After the breakfast, continue trek with gentle climb towards a small and easy pass. Cross the pass and then continue up along the valley till you reach at top of the pass.From the top of the pass you have enchanting and magnificient panoramic view of landscape. Easy descent as far as you reach at Honara. On the way your first glance will be mighty Zangskar river and Pidmo village. From Honara, you trek over open plateau for a kilometer as far as Campsite across the meadows near zanskar River. Overnight at camp in Zangla. (3430 m)

 

Day 16: Drive Zangla – Karsha – Stongde – Padum

Today you have full day culture tour around Padum by drive. After breakfast, drive to Stongde village. Visit beautiful Stonde monastery built on hill top by Lama Marpa 950 years ago. After visit Stonde monastery, drive to Karsha. Visit Karsha monastery, it is the largest of all the monastery in Zanskar valley and first founded by Great Lama Phagspa Shesrap. From the monastery, you have amazing and spectacular view of the Padum and its surrounding mountains. Overnight at Hotel in Padum. (3590 m)

 

Day 16: Sightseeing tour to Bardan monastery & Zongkul Monastery

After breakfast, drive to Sani. Visit Sani moanstery, the most famous monastery wherein you visit the sacred statues of Buddhas and Boddhisattavas. Sani monastery is located in the middle of field and houses. After visit monastery, drive to Zongkul monastery and then continue drive to Bardan monastery. After visiting the Bardan village, drive back to Padum. Overnight at Hotel in Padum. (3700 m)

 

Day 17: Drive Padum – Rangdum – Kargil (245 km)

After breakfast, drive to Kargil(245 kms). Enroute visit Rangdum monastery. According tohistory, Gelek Yashy Takpa built this monastery on hill top about 200 years ago. This monastery is physically located in the Suru Valley and culturally it is part of Zanskar. Afterlunch at Rangdum, continue drive to Kargil. Overnight at hotel in Kargil. (2900 m)

 

Day 18: Drive Kargil – Mulbek – Leh (225 kms)

After breakfast, drive to Leh via visiting Mulbek chamba (Rock curved statue of Maitreya Buddha). After the visit continue drive to Leh via crossing Photo-la. Arrive Leh. Overnight at Hotel in Leh. (3500 m)

 

Day 19: Leh

Day free for Rest or Shopping. Overnight at hotel in Leh.

 

Day 20: Flight Leh – Delhi

Early morning transfer to Airport to take flight for Delhi. Arrive Delhi, transfer to Hotel. Overnight at Hotel in Delhi.

 

Day 21: Departure

Morning after breakfast, sightseeing of Old Delhi and New Delhi. Late evening, transfer to IGI Airport for return flight.
